Living Artefacts

Passionate about understanding what we perceive as natural or artificial, I am exploring the notion of soulfulness in relation to our perception of artefacts, material culture and second nature.

For my actual project I am working with Kombucha to grow bacteria cellulose. Thus, considering the implications of what it means to work with a living material, I am conducting a series of experiments to investigate how the growth of bacteria cellulose can be guided or controlled to form intended shapes. My latest experiments involve growing and harvesting an endless roll of cellulose, the production of connected layers of material, and using the fermentation process to inflate the grown artefacts.
